The main aspire of playing blackjack is to beat hand of dealer by either possessing a total that outsmart the dealer’s total or by not being over 21 when the dealer does, also called ‘busting’. The casino gains an edge by asking players to play first, so that when they bust their hand, the casino stands to gain automatically even if the dealer busts later.
In blackjack game, all cards are taken at face value as the card suits are considered irrelevant. Value of picture cards is 10. The ace can be counted either as 11 (if the total value is below 21) or 1 (if the value exceeds 21). Such hands are termed soft hands and hard hands respectively. The total of any blackjack hand is the sum total of the value of cards in the hand.
Two cards are given to the dealer and the players. One of the dealer’s card (called the dealer’s upcard or the face card) is visible. The other card of dealer (known as the downcard of dealer or the hole card) is dealt with its face down (unseen). In case of the two player cards, three combinations are possible: face up, face down cards, or one up card and one down. The players are supposed to handle the blackjack cards only with one hand and it is necessary that the cards be always above the table.
Once a player looks at his first two cards and sees the value of the upcard of the dealer, the player must decide to play. This includes the following -
Hit: Means you signal the dealer to add one more card to your hand through certain hand gestures. They include making tapping sound on the table behind your cards with your finger.
Standing: means that you are content with the total of the cards in your hand and you want to stand by the cards you have. You can indicate your stand by making a waving signal by your hand your hand over the cards.
Pair Splitting: A player can use the option to split, which means making another bet equal to your original bet, when he or she has two similar cards (For examples, pair of 6s or of aces). This involves playing each card as a separate hand. Pair splitting allows you to draw as many cards as you want to each of the hand. Let us take an example: if you have a pair of 8’s (16) and you split those, you would have two separate hands, each containing 8. Thereafter, it would be mandatory for you to play either of the split hands first before playing the other.
Doubling down: This move allows you to double your bet in exchange of just one draw card. Most casinos ensure that you can double down only after you receive your first two cards and before drawing another card.
